Nicholas was a St. Louis native and graduated from St. Louis Preparatory Seminary. He began a long career as an educator, serving on the faculties of Chaminade College Preparatory Academy, Webster Groves High School, and Hawthorn Leadership School for Girls. His curiosity about other peoples and places led him to earn travel scholarships to Syria, Armenia, Morocco, Hawaii, Manzanar, and many other locations allowing him to infuse broad multicultural perspectives into his teaching.
Nicholas became a champion of gifted students and gifted education and spent close to a quarter century as a philosophy teacher at the state-supported Missouri Scholars Academy. Notes the family received during his illness and since his death provide compelling testimony to his love of students, and their love of him. Nicholas' legacy and spirit lives on through the many lives he impacted, many of whom would not be where they are or who they are today without his guidance and support. LEGO building, robotics, and trains were among his long-standing interests. So, too, were long Amtrak rides with his wife, Christine, and long walks with his dog, Oscar.
Nicholas is survived by his beloved partner Christine, and by scores and scores of family members, colleagues, friends, and former students who will cherish for years their memories of a man whose gentle kindness radiated the lives of all whom he knew.
Nicholas decided several years ago to donate his body to science and his body was accepted by the Washington University Body Donor Program. Nicholas did not want a memorial service or funeral, so a Celebration of Life is scheduled for Sunday, August 13 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at the Stupp Center in Tower Grove Park, St. Louis. A late lunch will be provided. Please consider bringing a printed photo of Nicholas, a poem, a message, or other memento to help create a memorial collage.
Memorial contributions to the Gifted Association of Missouri and to the Humane Society of Missouri will honor his work on behalf of the goals of these wonderful organizations.
