John was born on October 5, 1942, in Cape Girardeau, MO. He was the oldest of two sons to Marshel and Helen Wehmeyer. He grew up in Columbia and was a 1960 graduate of David H. Hickman High School. He graduated from the University of Missouri with his degree in Agriculture in 1967 and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. In 1964, he married, Sandra Langford where they spent 59 years together before she passed in 2023. For over 30 years he worked at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center as Lab Manager until he retired. He enjoyed playing golf, serving as range official for national competitive firearm shooting, and a Mason.
He was a man who found joy in life’s simple pleasures and whose warmth and humor left a lasting impression on everyone lucky enough to know him. John had a deep appreciation for the little things—especially a strong glass of cold brew, which he insisted was the secret to staying sharp. He was rarely seen without a cup in hand and a poodle by his side. His love for poodles was unmatched, and over the years, his furry companions became as much a part of the family as any of us.
He had a gift for laughter. Whether it was a well-timed pun or a groan-worthy “dad joke,” John could light up a room with his sense of humor. His jokes may have made us roll our eyes, but they also brought smiles when we needed them most.
Above all, John loved his family fiercely. He cherished every moment spent with his children and grandchildren, whether it was a holiday gathering, a weekend barbecue, or just sitting on the porch swapping stories. His presence was a source of comfort, strength, and joy.
Though we will miss his laughter, his wisdom, and his endless stories, we are grateful for the time we shared and the love he gave so freely. His spirit lives on in each of us, in every laugh, every memory, and every strong cup of coffee.
He is survived by his children, Laura Gordon and John Gordon, Jr. (Julie) both of Columbia; grandchildren, John (Abby) Reiss, Maddison & Megan Reiss, and Dylan Gordon; great-granddaughters, Payton & Paisley Reiss; a nephew, Thomas Kyle (Kelly) Gordon, and a loving extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Gordon; brother, Thomas Gordon, and his parents.
