Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM at First Baptist Church, 1112 E Broadway, Columbia, MO. Memorial service will follow at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at the church. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
Joan was born on March 6, 1933 in Columbia, MO the daughter of William Harold and Edna Estelle (Voss) Trower who preceded her in death. She was married on May 29, 1955 in Columbia, MO to Richard Sorrels who survives of the home. She was a preschool teacher at Woodhaven Learning Center and special education teacher for Columbia Public Schools until her retirement.
Joan was a very active and dedicated member of First Baptist Church, Colonial Order of the Crown, Colonial Dames of America, Daughter of American Colonists, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Union Veterans, Magna Charta Dames, Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrams, United Daughters of the Confederacy, United States Daughters of 1812, New England Women, Mother Singers and Boone County Historical Society.
Other survivors include: three children, Laura LaCross, Richard Sorrels II and Stephen Sorrels; one sister, Sherry McCarthy; two grandchildren, Bradd Sorrels and Taylor LaCross and two great granddaughters, Ellyssa Sorrels and Isadora Sorrels. She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Parker LaCross.
