James Franklin Powell, 78, of Columbia, Missouri formerly of Spring Lake, North Carolina, passed away on July 3, 2014 at Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital. Mr. James F. Powell was born on July 24, 1935 in High Point, North Carolina, the son of Joseph and Martha (Pike) Powell. On October 2, 1956, he married Tomie Kasai in Tokyo, Japan. She preceded him in death on January 21, 2011. Mr. James F. Powell was a veteran of the United States Army having served two tours in Vietnam. He retired from the Army after serving 21 honorable years and retired as a Federal employee for the Department of Army after serving 15 years. He loved fishing, camping, traveling, and spending time with his family. A role model for all fathers. Survivors include one sister, Annie Archie of Irvington, NJ, four sons, Jimmy Powell and his wife DeShanta Powell of Columbia, MO; Kenneth L. Powell of Spring Lake, NC and his significant other Trashanta Barksdale of Fayetteville, NC; Leonard F. Powell and his wife Mona Powell of Fayetteville, NC; and Neal A. Powell of Spring Lake, NC; one daughter, Muriel Anita Simmons and her husband Avery Simmons of Denver, CO; fifteen grandchildren, Claudette Thompson of Charlotte, NC; Tyrone Powell and his wife Octavia Powell of Raeford, NC; Tomia Harp and her husband Nathaniel Harp of Schofield Barracks, HI; Jamil Powell of Columbia, MO and his significant other Amanda Culler of Columbia, MO; Jimmy Powell II of Columbia, MO; Tina McGraw and her husband Pierre McGraw of Columbia, SC; Danielle Powell and her wife Terri Jackson of Fayetteville, NC; Alexis Yearby and her husband AJ Yearby of Hinesville, GA; Kenneth Powell Jr. of Spring Lake, NC; Le’Nyiah Powell of Spring Lake, NC; Kasai Powell of Spring Lake, NC; Natasha Marshall and her husband Brian Marshall of Newport, RI; Janay Lewis of Denver, CO; Kyle Lewis of Denver, CO; Myles Simmons of Denver, CO; Neal Powell Jr. of Charlotte, NC; twenty-three great-grand children, and one great-great granddaughter.
