Our precious mother, Hazel ‘Faye’ Newman, age 90, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2023, at 6:45 PM.
Faye was born on October 24, 1932, to Phillip Lawson and Beulah Blanch Scott in Millard, Missouri. After graduating from Brashear High School in 1950 where she was a standout basketball player … Faye moved to Kirksville, Missouri where she worked at Lambert Glove Company. In 1950, Faye met John Cochran Newman and was married on December 16, 1952. She went on to have three-(3) children, John Michael Newman, Terry Scott Newman, and David Allen Newman.
Faye was an unwavering sports fan and #1 supporter of her children’s sports events where her voice was often the ‘loudest expression’ in attendance. She and her husband never missed any of their boys games even if it meant they had to part ways and travel to separate destinations.
In 1988, Faye retired from JC Penneys where she worked as a Sales Audit Manager for twenty-six (26) years. She spent her retirement with family, grandchildren (Chase Alexander Newman and Jake Rockwell Newman), and friends. She loved being a part of a big family, traveling to California to spend time with her grandchildren, hosting family get-togethers and playing cards with a group of friends who for years would meet on a weekly basis. She had an extraordinary sense of humor, loved to laugh, walk, and garden. She was a loyal sister and friend and amazing wife, mother, and grandmother (her favorite roles). She lived a full life and was the embodiment of love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, and gentleness. Faye was a devout Christian and a faithful member of the Community United Methodist Church.
She is proceeded in death by her husband and parents, her brother Kenneth Scott, her sisters, Nadine Pinkston, Frances Helton, Neva Buckalew, and half siblings, Lahoyt Scott and Letha Miller. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and her sister Katheryn Gregory (spouse Donald), of Kirksville, Missouri, and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 West, Columbia, Missouri 65202 on Saturday June 10 with visitation beginning at 1pm and service at 2pm. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Incorporated.
