Elwood Dale Everett, 82, of Columbia, MO, passed away November 29, 2021. He was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on August 18, 1939 to the late Elwood Humphrey Everett and Lola Mae (Tennison) Everett. Dale was preceded in death by his older brother Charles Mace Everett. In 1956, he graduated from Fort Gibson High School in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. Following high school, he attended Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and completed his pre-medicine requirements in 1959. While attending the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine, he married Billie Jean Cain of Britton, Oklahoma in 1962. After graduation from medical school, he served as physician in the U.S. Army beginning in 1964 until 1977. After discharge from active duty in the military, he joined the faculty of the University of Missouri School of Medicine and founded and directed the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine. He also continued to serve in the 5503 US Army Reserve until 1992, retiring from the military as a colonel and 5503 Army Reserve Hospital Commander. During his tenure, Dale served honorably as the medical director at Fort Leonard Wood during Operation Desert Storm.
As a Professor of Medicine at MU, Dale served the department in many important ways, including as interim department chair and associate chair for education. He made MU a better place for patients, students, staff, and faculty colleagues. He was a world expert in tick-borne diseases and invasive fungal infections. Former colleagues and trainees remember him as a master clinician who was ready to serve however needed. He retired in 2004. In addition to his many professional endeavors, Dale enjoyed gardening, music, cooking, poetry, and golf --- with a Saturday out on the links with his wife and sons making for an enjoyable day.
Dale was a faithful and dedicated Christian, worshipping at the Stadium Boulevard (now Fairview Road) Church of Christ for the past 44 years. His study of and in depth understanding of the Bible led him to live out a life of service and love in all that he did. Dale held service and leadership roles as Elder, Deacon, and Bible class teacher. He valued and respected all people, with a great knack for helping other people be better. He was hardworking, service oriented, and had a wonderfully subtle sense of humor. His many accomplishments came in part due to the encouragement and support of the love of his life, Billie. He was a great role model, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor.
He is survived by his wife, Billie; his sons, Kevin D. Everett (Laurie) of Columbia, MO and C. Brett Everett of Evanston, IL; his daughters, Jennifer Everett Stebbins of Franklin, TN and Kathryn Everett Andes (David) of Madison, WI; and his 11 beloved grandchildren.
