Dorothy “Dottie” Elizabeth Golson, 100, of Warrensburg, Missouri died in her sleep at Harmony Gardens where she had been a resident for the past few years. She lived most of her life in Columbia, except for a few years in Mexico, Missouri and then in 2010, moved to Warrensburg to be closer to family.
Dorothy Elizabeth Davenport was born in Columbia, Missouri, the only child of John Elkin Davenport and Lillian Rose (Hulen) Davenport. She attended Columbia public schools and graduated from Hickman High School in 1941. On Christmas Day 1942, she married John A. Golson, Jr. in Columbia, Missouri. John was active in the military during World War II and she followed him to Germany before they came back to Columbia to make their home. John began working for his father-in-law in the family business as a linotyper at Columbia Printing Company, located on North 9th Street. Eventually John and Dottie purchased the business from her parents and Dottie worked with her husband until the business was sold and they both retired. The Golson family enjoyed camping and going to the Lake of the Ozarks often on the weekends. Later in life Dottie worked in the food service at Stephens College and later in the flower shop at Nowells on Keene street. She loved to sew, knit, square dance, craft, travel and work on genealogy.
Dottie was active in several organizations throughout her lifetime. As John was a charter member of the Columbia Cosmopolitan Luncheon Club, Dottie was the first treasurer of the auxiliary club called PALs. She was active in the Boone County Historical Society in the 1970s and 80s and a member of the Genealogical Society of Central Missouri for several years. She was a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her ancestors were from many of the earliest families that settled Boone County, Missouri.
Dottie is survived by her daughter, Gayle Golson of Warrensburg, Missouri; son, Glenn Golson (Jeanette) of Warrensburg, daughter-in-law, Emily (Golson) Jennings (Drue) of Leawood, KS; five grandchildren: Grant (Liz) Golson of Overland Park, Kansas; Elizabeth (Greg) Steinberg of Leawood, Kansas; Miles (Emery) Golson of Boulder, Colorado; Thomas Golson (Alison), Kansas; Katherine Golson, Kansas. She is also survived by great grandchildren, Bonnie Golson and John Grant Golson, III; Arlo Golson and Muna Golson, Emerson Steinberg, Ellery Steinberg and Juliette Steinberg. A few nieces and nephews survive.
Dottie was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Golson, Jr. on November 24, 1991, after 48 years of marriage, and her son John G. Golson, who died June 12, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents, John E. and Lillian R. (Hulen) Davenport, as well as her in-laws, John A.,Sr. and Amanda (Skillman) Golson. She was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas Golson (Jeanette) formerly of Oakridge, Tennessee; and George Golson (Doris) formerly of Jefferson City, Missouri.
A private graveside service will be held later this Spring at Memorial Park Cemetery, Columbia, Missouri.
