Hattie Carlene Pemberton Owen passed away peacefully on December 13, 2016. Carlene was better known as Granny to family and many children in the Hallsville community where she lived her entire life. She celebrated her 91st birthday just before she began adapting to life with new friends and caretakers at Lenoir Woods.
Carlene, the daughter of Alma Pearl Dennis Pemberton and Emmett Evans Pemberton, was born August 15, 1925. The first years of Carlene’s married life were spent with her firstborn son, R. L., at the home of her parents while they awaited the return of her husband, Richard Leroy Owen, Sr., from WWII.
Homemaking, gardening, church activities and raising a family filled Carlene’s busy life. Her children, Olga Owen, Dennis Owen, Ola Palmer and Quita Hubble, along with grandchildren Gail Owen, Gene Robbins, Francie Martin, Corey Austill, Wendy Valdez, Rick Owen and Troy Owen, 15 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren were Carlene’s joy. For many years she created special handmade Christmas ornaments and crocheted afghans for her family and enjoyed hosting dozens of family celebrations on their farm located west of Hallsville.
Carlene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, Howard Duane Pemberton, and one granddaughter, Tonia Renee Owen.
Ask anyone what they will remember most about Carlene and you’re sure to hear, “her smile, kindness and wonderful laugh.”
Visitation will be 1-2:00pm Sunday, December 18, 2016 at Memorial Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life service to follow at 2pm. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
