Virginia Hood Scott passed away peacefully at her home in Columbia, Maryland, on June 18, 2024. She was born October 2, 1936 in Washington, D.C., and spent her early years living in Bethesda, MD. She moved to Richmond, Virginia, in 1950 and graduated from Hermitage High School in 1954. Known by friends and family as Ginger, she graduated from Randolph Macon Women’s College in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and received a Master of Arts in Christian Education from Union Presbyterian Seminary in 1961. Her early career included serving as Director of Christian Education at churches in Walterboro, South Carolina, and Alexandria, Virginia.
She married the love of her life, Thomas D. Scott, in February of 1963, and the newlyweds soon moved from Alexandria to Bowie, Maryland. She became a full-time mother in 1967, and the young family moved to the new town of Columbia in 1970.
Ginger became an active supporter of her three sons’ many activities, volunteering for the PTA, swim team, scouting and other organizations. Caring strongly about the community and wanting Columbia to stay true to its founding principles, she supported many local initiatives and candidates for local village elections.
Ginger was devoted to her family including her five grandchildren. Ginger and Tom enjoyed traveling and especially enjoyed the vacations with the entire family.
During her final months, she received compassionate care from Visiting Angels and accentCare hospice service.
Virginia is survived by her husband, Thomas, her sons Thomas (Katherine), James, Charles (Lisa) and five grandchildren, Kile, Christopher, Evelyn, Carter and Thomas. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, James and Margaret Hood.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Ginger’s life during a visitation at Columbia Presbyterian Church, 10001 MD-108, Columbia, MD from 6-8PM on Friday, July 19, 2024 and at a memorial service at Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church, 900 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC at 11AM on Saturday, July 20, 2024. (Parking for the memorial service is available on levels B3 and B4 of the church parking lot beneath the 901 K Street office building, entrance on 10th Street NW just past the Henley Park Hotel. Please bring your parking ticket inside to be validated.)
