Richard Wilson Eckert, affectionately known as Dick, of Ellicott City, MD, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on April 8, 2024, surrounded by family and friends. Born to Anna and Frederick Eckert on November 8, 1942 in Harrisburg, PA, Dick was the oldest of five.
A graduate of York Suburban High School in York, PA, Dick met the love of his life, Sandra (Sandy) Kerr at the age of 16. After graduating high school, they each went to separate colleges, but stayed in touch. While Dick was serving in the U.S. Army and performing security investigations for military clearances, Dick and Sandy made plans to get married.
On September 11, 1965, Dick and Sandy were married in York, PA and built a life together filled with love and happiness. They moved to Baltimore, MD and Sandy started working at the Social Security Administration (SSA). She talked Dick into taking the Federal Service Exam as he was ending his military career and he accepted a job at SSA and began his career programming mainframes.
Dick’s career at SSA was marked by dedication and excellence. He rose through the ranks and primarily worked in the Systems organization. He was well loved and his opinion was always sought on projects. Dick was well known for dedicating too many hours, but he loved the mission.
After retiring with 44 years of government service in 2007, Dick had such a strong work ethic and felt he had more to contribute to the mission, so he started a second career at Global Commerce and Information and was subsequently recruited by Northrop Grumman to support SSA.
In addition to Dick’s commitment to government service, he was even more devoted to his Christian faith. Dick was very involved with leadership and community activities at Chapelgate Presbyterian Church since 1987. Dick was an Elder for many years and ministered to numerous members of the congregation. Along with Sandy, he was an active participant in the Evangelism Explosion program for many years, and could always be found driving members to appointments or serving on personnel and financial committees. His commitment to his church community was evident through his strong presence and helpful spirit.
Dick lived and loved life to his fullest. His interests included music (all kinds!) and hobbies (Bible studies, wood carving, painting, cars). He was extremely knowledgeable on a variety of topics and there was never a dull conversation. Dick took time out of his busy schedule to mentor young people and encourage them with their careers, home life, and faith.
A visitation for Dick will be held Monday, April 15, 2024 from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM at Witzke Funeral Homes Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, MD 21045. A committal service will occur Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at 1:15 PM at St. John's Cemetery, 3480 St. John's Lane, Ellicott City, MD 21042.
Dick Eckert will be remembered as a loving husband, brother and friend. His gregarious spirit and welcoming personality will be deeply missed by all that knew him.
