Dr. Welsh was born and raised in Baltimore. He exhibited his extraordinary ability in music from an early age and studied piano. He valued knowledge and learning, and obtained his Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Composition from the University of Maryland College Park. As an outstanding educator, Dr. Welsh taught various music courses in the Department of Music, University of Maryland Baltimore County. He had profound knowledge of music from different periods and cultures, including classic, jazz, modern, and Japanese. He also completed his degree in Computer Science and had been working for Amtrak as a highly specialized SAP Portal/EI Developer for 16 years.
Dr. Welsh was a Renaissance man with many talents, interests, and accomplishments. Among others, he authored a book, The Music of Stuart Saunders Smith, which was published by Greenwood Press in 1995. He was an active member of the Washington Toho Koto Society for 20 years, composing and performing with the ensemble by playing the Japanese zither Koto and fiddle Shamisen. His artistic talent was further developed a few years ago when he picked up a brush and started painting. Painting, and studying the art of painting, became a great passion and he gave beauty and spirit to landscapes, still life, and portraits.
Dr. Welsh was a loving husband, father and son. He lived in Columbia and is survived by his beloved wife, Linping Anne Welsh, also a musician, two loving sons Chen (23) and Alexander (12), and his mother Merriam Welsh.
Dr. Welsh was widely respected by his friends and colleagues for his integrity, generosity, sense of humor, and passion for life.
