grandfather of six grandchildren, brother, uncle, friend, and beloved internal medicine physician
for nearly 50 years, passed away in his Glendora, California, home of 46 years at the age of 77
after a long, courageous battle with frontotemporal dementia.
Rolando was born on April 7, 1943, in Laoag City, Philippines to Pastor Tito Pablo Atiga and
Prudencia Lodevico Atiga. He was the second to the youngest of 13 children. On March 26,
1966, he married Violeta Vallo Angeles, M.D., a fellow classmate from medical school.
Together, they raised three children: Sheila Prudence (eldest daughter), Rolando Angeles (son),
and Liza Jane (youngest daughter).
In 1967, Rolando received his medical degree at Manila Central University in the Philippines.
After immigrating to the United States in 1969, he interned at The Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati,
Ohio, and completed his residency at the VA Hospital in Long Beach, California. He became an
attending physician at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles, California, and Loma Linda
University in Loma Linda, California. In 1974, he started a private practice and later developed
the Tri-City Urgent Care Center in Glendora, California in 1984. In addition, he was an active
consulting physician for the Philippine Consulate and subsidiaries. He also served in leadership
roles in Filipino Adventist Medical Missions.
As a young boy, Rolando accepted Jesus as his personal and risen Savior and felt a calling to
medical ministry. He was a dedicated Seventh-day Adventist Christian who believed in
spreading the gospel of Jesus to the world. Rolando loved his family, making friends, studying
the Bible, reading Christian literature, Christian ministry, nature, gardening, photography,
traveling, cooking, fishing, tennis, skiing, watching his favorite basketball team ( the Los Angeles
Lakers), watching boxing with Manny Pacquio, sharing delicious meals with others, and music.
In particular, he loved to sing and could play several instruments — like the piano, harmonica,
and ukulele — by ear. His zest for life, adventure, fun, and laughter was infectious. He was an
avid collector of cameras, pens, and watches. He had a passion for christian medical ministry,
preaching, teaching, pianos, and music in general. His pride and joy were his six grandchildren;
he loved the role of proud, doting grandpa.
Rolando was preceded in death by his father, Tito; his mother, Prudencia; his two older sisters,
Priscilla Catalon and Febe Atiga; and his brothers, George Atiga and Prudencio Atiga. He is
survived by his wife, Violeta; his three children and their spouses, Sheila and Steven Hodgkin,
Rolando and Memrose Gonzalez Atiga, and Liza Atiga; his six grandchildren, Chase, Savannah,
Corinne, Sophia, Alexander, and Summer; his sisters, Veronica Padaong, Cleope Andres,
Magdalene Posadas, Marina Sapigao, Estelita Atiga, Louella Miguel; his brothers, Tito Atiga, Jr.
and Gerardo Atiga; and his numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2020, at the Montecito Chapel at 12 p.m.
with a burial at 2 p.m. at Montecito Memorial Park and Mortuary in Colton, California.
