John Chang was born in Hong Kong on March 16, 1933 to Ah Lung Chang and Siu Nah Young. He is the sixth child of seven, three boys and four girls. John and older brother Jacob were among the first group of local HK students to enroll in Clear Water Bay School. John eventually dropped out from CWB, stayed at home, and attended English evening schools.
In 1952 John left Hong Kong and traveled to complete his studies in Australia. He stayed in Australia until 1956 when he departed to the United States to study at Washington Missionary College. He majored in Business Administration, and minored in Economics. During the summers of 1958 to 1961 John built a name for himself as a 5 star colporteur, where he earned 5 scholarships in 1 year! Upon graduation he was hired by the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference to serve as an assistant secretary for the Literature Evangelism department.
In 1964, John was asked to go back to help at his sister Helen’s successful fashion company, Helen Wong Co. He worked with Helen for 9 years until the time finally came when John branched out and began his own fashion company.
During his years of academic training, John developed his talents in music (he played the trumpet really well), art (his charcoal and oil painting could match the professional painters), photography, athletics, salesmanship, and public relations. In 1981 he decided to sell his business and move to the United States. In 1983 he traveled to the US and resided in San Francisco for 3.5 years. In 1987 he moved to Southern California where he stayed over 35 years. During this time he enjoyed many extensive travels all over Asia.
John was a very generous person. He loved to make people happy and he loved to make them smile. He supported many organizations during his lifetime including his Alma Matter, Washington Adventist University, along with the North America San Yu Alumni Association's scholarship program. For the past three years, John stayed at a care-home Redlands. Many of you visited him there. He appreciated your visits and friendship. Last month, June 8th, 2021 at 2 p.m. John rested in the arms of Jesus at age 88.
The Chang family would like to thank you for your presence today and for your prayers, love and sympathy. Your support is greatly appreciated. We also wish to thank the Loma Linda Chinese Church.
