Helen Ann O'Doherty was born on June 24, 1954 in the U.S Naval Hospital in Guam. She is the first daughter of Alfred Thomas Powell, Sr. and Dorothy Sue Deakle Powell. Helen has four brothers, Tom, Jack, Duane and Robert and four sisters, Rose, Marty, Sue and Mary.
Helen's father Alfred was in the U.S. Navy as a Senior Chief Fire Control Technician so she was considered a "Navy Brat" and traveled the world as a child. One of her favorite places that she lived and often talked about was Japan. She had many fond memories living there.
Helen had three daughters, Theresa Ann Quintanilla, Shelly Rose Diaz, and Jessica Lynn Diaz. Shelly Rose Diaz passed away on May 19, 1983 at the tender age of nine years old of Leukemia. Helen never fully recovered over the loss of Shelly. Helen has six grandchildren, Daniel, Mariah, Ryan, Jessalyn, Manuel, and Luke.
Helen married her husband Joseph Richard Patrick O'Doherty on March 27, 1998. She retired as a Corporate Headhunter and Property Manager and volunteered her time working for GAAP for six years. While working for GAAP Helen became a member of the Board of Directors and assisted in training law students from Hastings Law School. Helen's true passion was her role as an artist. She had several art shows over the years and continued to paint beautiful abstract paintings throughout her life.
Sadly, Helen lost her battle to lung cancer and passed away on October 13, 2013. She leaves behind her husband, two daughters and their spouses, six grandchildren, four brothers, four sisters, and numerous friends. She will live on forever in each of their hearts and memories.
