Dear Portilla family, 

I’m so very sorry for your loss.  I can’t imagine how difficult this time is for you. I’m glad I got to meet Carlos in SF many years ago when visiting Robert, what a fun trip! I’ll also never forget the homemade empanadas. Sending you all peace and love, my thoughts are with you.

Mercedes, Patty, Bobby, and Abby; I find it difficult to express what I feel after another great loss in the family.  I embrace all of you with love and warmth in this moment of  great sorrow. I will always remember compadre Carlos for his love of his family (you). He smiled big every time he talked about any of you. He was a kind, respectful, generous, hard working man. He had a good sense of humor and a great smile. He had faith in God and always commended his family to him. He was always willing to help anyone at a moments notice. Carlos has left a huge void in our hearts and in our lives. He loved life! He enjoyed traveling, good food, and sharing with family. He would want everyone to continue and to be happy. In his memory with God's grace may you all be able to continue on and live life to it's fullest. May the Lord heal your hearts and grant you peace. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I worked with Carlos for 20 years as my Teamsters Union steward.  He is a great man to me. I am devastated over his passing as well the other victims &  his grieving family members. My God bless Carlos and his family members and those who will miss this fine man. Amen , Steven "Buck" Graham.

Mis queridos amigos, 

En la vida, creo que ningún encuentro es por casualidad. Sin embargo, el impacto que estas personas tienen, siempre se difiere. 

Cuando eramos más jovenes, mi hermano y yo tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer a los amigos de mis padres. Como niños, dimos por sentado estas interacciones.  

No obstante, ahora, cuando recordamos a nuestras vidas con la familia Portilla, nos damos cuenta de que ellos fueron una gran parte de nuestro crecimiento, y sin ellos, nunca hubiéramos sido lo que somos hoy. 

¿Cuantas personas has conocido con esta presencia e influencia?
Fuimos afortunados. Crecer rodeado por amor genuino es una bendición.  

Gracias siempre a  Mercedes, Carlos, Bobby, y Patty por asegurar que nuestros años de formación fueron llenos de felicidad. 

Mi más sentido pésame. Que Carlos descanse en paz y que Dios los ayuda a restañar con tiempo. 💐

To my dearest friend Mercedes & her life partner Carlos

You both filled my life with love,  kindness, friendship among many other beautiful attributes that made you all the two most favorite people I had the pleasure of knowing. 

Carlos you always had a positive spin on life. You shared freely what you had and you were always ready to give more. You were never too busy to lend a helping hand. I loved your extremely funny humor   and it was always a pleasure hanging out. I had most of my fun memories in the US going out with you both, it's forever in my heart. 

Mercedes, Bobby, Patty, we hold you all dearly in our hearts.  While we know that our time here is limited,  it's difficult when someone you love leaves you behind.  I pray that you all forever cherish his memory,  and continue living and loving life as Carlos would want you to.

Carlos will as always be, to my family and I the consummate gentleman. 

We befriended his family in the 1990s and shared some of our best life experiences and adventures with them, while we lived in the US. He and Mercedes were like brother and sister to us, and uncle and aunty to our children. 

Though 18 years have passed since we last met, the memories of our times together has not dimmed. We will miss you Carlos, as I am sure others will too. 

Thanks for touching our lives and making such an unforgettable impression.
