Wayne A. Schnittger

Wayne A. Schnittger was born in rural Martin County, Minnesota, February 3, 1936, son of Arthur and Ella (Lubenow) Schnittger. He died on January 8, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the age of 80.

Wayne grew up and went K-12 to the Dolliver School in Dolliver, Iowa, graduating in 1954. He served with the U. S. Army from 1954-56. He is a lifetime member of Martin County, MN. VFW Post 1222.

Following the service to his country, he started working in construction, first as a carpenter apprentice and then as a bricklayer. Wayne was very proud of his craft and was a 50+ Year member of the International Bricklayers Union. He worked mainly on commercial projects such as schools, churches, prisons, etc. Some of the more well known jobs he worked were Denver International Airport and the Federal Supermax prison at Florence, Colorado.

Wayne and Janice Watts were married, July 20, 1968 at Armstrong, Iowa. They have lived at St. James and Fairmont, Minnesota and for the past 34 Years in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They are the parents of one daughter, Sara.

During his spare time, Wayne enjoyed sports, card games, number puzzles, musicals, dancing and most of all fishing for walleye with good friends. He also volunteered for Christmas Unlimited and the U.S. Olympic Committee. Jan and Wayne were very close to their families and spent many vacations visiting them in Iowa and Minnesota. They also liked to spend time in Arizona and a favorite vacation destination was the Mayan Rivera of Mexico.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jan, of Colorado Springs, daughter Sara Schnittger and her husband, Gerald Hehe, of Fairfax, Virginia, and many nieces, nephews and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Hazel Leiding and Vera Hurlburt and a brother, Harold Schnittger.

A memorial service/reception will be held at Swan Law Funeral Home, 501 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO, on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 10:30 a.m.. A celebration of life and internment of his ashes at Armstrong Grove Cemetery, Armstrong Iowa, will be held at a later date.
