Walter was born on February 26,1956 in Jacksonville, FL to Lawrence C. Warren and Elizabeth J. Moore. His family landed in Colorado very early in Walter’s life, and it was the only state he ever called home. Walter graduated from Grand Junction High School, Grand Junction Colorado in 1975, and went on to study Computer Science and Programming as well as Psychology and Philosophy, graduating with a Bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO. It was at UNC that he met the love of his life, Pamela (Penny) Miller.
Following Penny’s graduation from UNC, Walter and Penny moved to Colorado Springs where they built a life together on their shared interests. They loved the theater, attending Messiah singalongs at Christmas time and listening to their favorite music, especially ABBA. They had a huge interest in stars and astronomy and enjoyed spending time with their Stargazer group to catch a glimpse of the phenomenons of the galaxy. They were also collectors of many gadgets, doodads and thingy’s. Walter especially loved coin collecting, a love he shared with his father, whose collection he inherited upon his fathers passing. Walter was not a coin snob though, as he got just as much joy turning the crank to collect a smashed souvenir penny as he did finding a sought after coin on eBay.
Walter was a gentle, complicated, sweet, stubborn and private person. He also had an enormous heart and gave the best hugs. He suffered the loss of his beautiful wife Penny several years ago, a blow he never fully recovered from, but he still had dreams and goals and was not ready to leave this world so soon. Walter and Penny lived a modest life together, but achieved their lifelong dream of home ownership through thriftiness and sacrifice.
When it was clear that he didn’t have much time left, Walter had one wish, which was to go on an Alaskan Cruise. His mom and siblings rallied, and in less than three weeks, Walter was on his cruise with his mom, two brothers, and his sister. His word for this special time together with his family was simply “precious”.
Walter was predeceased by his wife Penny, father Lawrence Warren, step-mother Judy Warren and step-father Donald Petersen. He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth (Moore) Petersen, brothers Wayne Warren (Anita) and Roger Warren (Brenda) and sister Laurel McMullen (Michael). While Walter and Penny were never blessed with a child of their own, Walter is also survived by many adored nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will occur with details to be determined. In the meantime, his family is comforted picturing Walter and Penny reunited and floating among the stars.
