Vance, affectionately known as “Grandpeer” to his grandchildren, was born in Springfield, Ohio to parents Glenn and Lois Payne. He was the oldest of six boys. He always joked he was the “only girl” because his mother taught him how to cook, clean, and do everything needed to run a household. He was successful at everything he put his hand to. Though he grew up in a low income neighborhood, he never let limitations stop him and he became the first in his neighborhood to own a car. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve, and then began a successful career in computers. He quickly rose to become the manager at almost every job he had. While living in California, he met the love of his life, Carmella. They were married soon after and they loved to travel. They travelled all over the United States; their favorite destination was Hawaii, which they visited four times.
Vance was always active and he enjoyed roller skating, singing, camping, bowling, games, reading, cooking, and even yard work. He was always looking for ways to help people and reach out to others. He ran a non-profit ministry with his wife for over 30 years which blessed others in many different ways through a library, events, periodicals, websites, monetary support of those in need, a school, and in the last few years through an outreach program, supplying Bible study and personal growth materials.
Vance was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Carmella Payne, his son Sean Payne, his parents, and his brothers, Craig, Mickey, and Bobby. He leaves behind his former wife Anita Payne, their daughter, Denise Payne of CA, his son, Jonathan Payne of CO, and daughter, Sherri Payne of TX, seven grandchildren, Vance (CA), Christopher, Bethany, Shannon, Demetrio, Corey, and Vance (CO), as well as great-grandchildren, brothers Glenn “Junior” and Darrell, numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many dear friends.
A private memorial service will be held in honor of a life well-lived.
