Stan was born to Cora P. and William C. Osborne in Alma, Colorado on July 3, 1923. He grew up in the small mountain town with his younger brother Burton. He attended school in Alma and graduated from Alma High School in 1941(?). He grew up fishing, ice skating, skiing, gathering firewood, picking wild berries, exploring the surrounding wilderness, and developing a lifelong love of the alpine wildflowers. For a few summers Stan, Burton and some of their friends made a weekly hike from their home in Alma to the Moose Mine located far above timberline on the side of Mt. Bross to deliver mail to the miners. Their reward for this long hike was to eat delicious rolls prepared by the bunkhouse cook who happened to be a French chef. He loved telling stories of how things were in the “old days” growing up in Alma and could remember a time when there were a total of 2 cars in the entire town.
Stan served in the US Army stationed in London and Germany during WWII where one of his duties included working at an army supply store. In addition to his military service, as a young man he completed electrician school in Chicago then held a number of different jobs. He drove a gas truck between Craig and Alma for the Gately Motor Company. Stan and Burton owned a general mercantile store for a short time in Alma. He also ran a movie projector for a circuit of several small town theaters in Park, Grand, Summit, Jackson and Eagle counties in the late 1940’s. Stan spent most of his career life working for the Colorado Dept. of Highways. His first position was in Fairplay maintaining highways in Park County. After a few years he transferred to Colorado Springs where he spent most of his highway career working on Highway 24 (Ute Pass) and eventually I-25. On June 24, 1955 he married the love of his life, Elaine Sanger, and they shared 44 wonderful years together until her death in May 1999. He is survived by sisters-in-law, cousins, and nieces and nephews on both the Osborne and Sanger sides of the family. Stan will be lovingly remembered for his kind heart, gentle spirit, delightful laugh, and generosity.
