Sharon is survived by her husband George, her daughter Natalie, her son, Nick, her sister Lynn Regina and husband David of McMurray, PA, her parents Bill and Elinore Hughes of Pittsburgh, PA, her brother Bill Hughes of Washington, PA, and her brother Allyn Hughes of Ponchatoula, LA, as well as seven nephews and five nieces.
Sharon is also survived by many, many close friends who were very special to her throughout her life.
Sharon served in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, where she achieved the rank of Captain, which is equivalent of Colonel, and retired with 20 years of service. She did everything in life to the best of her ability.
The grace and dignity with which she fought this horrible disease was an inspiration to us all. Never did she shy away from her friends, despite the handicaps imposed upon her. Never did she refuse an invitation to a gathering, because she loved people and people loved her. From her we learned how to live, and also how to die.
Sharon was a very athletic person. She excelled in every sport in which she became interested. Whether it was field hockey, basketball, diving, softball, gymnastics or skiing, -her beloved skiing-, she was far above average. She loved and appreciated so much about life. She never failed to look at Pikes Peak, or the Garden of the Gods, views from her home, and not comment on how beautiful they were.
Her children were her biggest thrill. She loved them so much. She treasured the time with them, and couldn't wait to hear about their experiences and activities. Family with Sharon came first, and to them, including her parents, brothers and sister, she was totally dedicated.
Sharon was a very humble person who never called attention to herself. Her interest was in others. It was one of the things that made her so beautiful. She never met anyone she didn't like, and everyone was equal in her eyes. Her positive attitude was contagious and genuine.
She had many favorite places, but Vail and Cabo San Lucas were very high on the list. When she was there life was always as good as it could get.
