Seth was born May 10, 1937 in Ogden, Utah to Lewis and Hannah Hale. He was the fifth of six children: La Rene, Ernest, Gaylene, Val, Seth, and Alana. Some of Seth’s fondest memories from growing up were their family trips to Yellowstone, his best friend Cooper, and working on Lowell McGregor’s chicken farm. Seth left high school in the 10th grade, joining the Air Force on June 14, 1954, when he was 17 years old, having to lie about his age. He wanted to go to Korea and help his brothers in the war. Seth never got the chance to go; the war ended before he finished bootcamp.
Seth met his first wife, Mary Jo McDaniel, at a bar just off base. She was a dime dancer and a bouncer. They enjoyed spending hours together dancing and laughing, marrying Oct 23, 1956. They had 5 children: Rose - stepchild, Caren, Kim, Rian, and Jeffry. During their time together whenever Seth was reassigned to a new location, he made sure to take Mary Jo and their kids with him, except during his two tours in Vietnam, even when the Air Force would not pay for the family to come. Seth’s favorite form of travel was on cruise ships; they enjoyed several cruises together. When not together on a cruise ship Seth loved fishing and Mary Jo would go to Vegas. Seth first fell in love with Colorado while being stationed here. He loved Colorado so much that he made sure that he retired here on July 1, 1974. They were together until Mary’s passing on Jan 17, 1995.
A couple of years after becoming a widower Seth was set up on a blind date by friends, with E. Navonne (Bunny) Castanien. Both instantly knew that they were going to be together forever. They spent their first date talking all night at a restaurant, until they closed the restaurant and had to be asked to leave. Once home Bunny called her best friend and told him that she was getting married, when he asked when she told him “as soon as he asks me”. They were married Sept 27, 1997. However, Bunny loved to tell people how they had gotten married to each other multiple times. With Seth’s marriage to Bunny came three additional stepchildren: John Jr, Linda, and Julie. Shortly after marrying, Seth retired from his second job with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Seth and Bunny loved to travel and did so extensively, often on cruises. They made several happy memories until Bunny’s passing on March 4, 2021.
Seth is survived by: his sister Alana Norris, sister-in-law Kay Hale, son-in-law Barry (Buzz) Zaiger, and his children, Kim Beaulieu, Rian Hale, John Castanien Jr, Linda Norris, Julie Reed-Irwin and an innumerable number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Seth is preceded in passing by: his wives - Mary Jo Hale, Evelyn Navonne Hale; his children - Rose Zaiger, Caren Irwin, Jeffry Hale; and his siblings - La Rene, Ernest, Gaylene, and Val.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers please make a donation in his name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or your favorite cancer charity.
