Sarah Carmean, 83 years old, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 5, 2024 after her valiant battle against vascular dementia.

Sarah Irene Stewart was born in Kirksville, MO in 1941, to Harry and Mary Ann (Roe) Stewart. She was a graduate of Saydel High School and later attended Drake University. She was married to Thomas Hurst for 31 years. That union was joined by two daughters and a son.

She felt fortunate to have lived in Des Moines, IA, Kansas City, MO, Minneapolis, MN, Chicago, IL, Missoula, MT, Billings, MT and Burlington, IA, making lasting friends in each location.

Sarah was employed at Eastern Montana College and the Billings Deaconess Hospital Foundation in Billings, MT. Upon her return to Iowa in 1989, she accepted the position of Assistant Administrator for the Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce.

She married Delbert Carmean in 1991 and moved to Burlington, Iowa. Sarah enjoyed cooking, decorating her home and various crafts. She took great pride in being a mother/homemaker, scout leader, room mother, as well as attending her daughters’ concerts, plays and little league games.

Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Carmean, her parents, her son Charles, brothers Harold and Darrell and sister Mary Lou.

She is survived by her daughters, Carrie Hurst Taylor (Michael), of Billings, MT and Jennifer Hurst Gorbea (Edgardo) of Colorado Springs, CO and three wonderful grandchildren: Ellen Taylor, Silvia Gorbea and Sebastian Gorbea. She is also survived by her close companion, Donald Bryant.
