Robert “Bob” Hawk was born in Colby, Kansas on October 26, 1925. His parents, Loyal Dale and Lois Mallory welcomed Bob as their fourth child. He is survived by his oldest siblings, Dale Jr. and Betty and his youngest brother Gary.
Bob was an athlete at Colby High School, enjoying sports like football, basketball and softball. After graduation, he and a classmate Stuart Brenn joined the Navy. This good friend was later to become Bob’s brother-in-law. Bob was stationed in Pearl Harbor, assigned to a PT boat. One of his most shared memories of this time was of seeing the remnants of the Arizona first hand. Bob served honorably in the Navy for about three years. He was discharged in 1946. Upon returning to Kansas, he took advantage of the GI Bill and enrolled in the Engineering Department and Kansas University. Go Jay Hawks! While home on Christmas break he met the love of his life, Nadine Morton, at a community dance in Atwood Kansas, where her parents Tom and Maude Morton were chaperoning. Nadine was a teacher in a one room schoolhouse outside Atwood. Bob and Nadine were married two months later, February 8, 1947 in Oberlin, Kansas. This union would last 64 years. Bob withdrew from college and they moved to Colby, Kansas where after a variety of jobs Bob went to work for the grocery store, Safeway. He continued his career with Safeway working his way up from sack-boy to store manager.
Bob and Nadine were blessed with their first lovely daughter Sharon Kay in August of 1948. Susan Carol followed four years later in 1952 and then Charlotte Jo in 1955; all three were born in Colby, Kansas. After moving to Colorado Springs the fourth and final child, Sandra Lu was born in 1960. Daughter Jo married Brad Miller in 1977 in Boseman, Montana. They have two children, Justin Warren, named after Bob, born in 1982 and Mallory Rose, named after Bob’s mother, born in 1987. Daughter Susan married Michael Farley in 1990.
Bob continued to work at Safeway as a store manager for over thirty years, relocating four times before returning to Colorado Springs in 1974, where he remained for the rest of his life. Bob was an active member in the Masons, the Elks, the VFW and the Legion. Bob was an avid fisherman his entire life and traveled to Canada, California and many fresh water lakes in the western United States in search of the “big” fish. He loved to travel and he and Nadine and their children took many pleasurable vacations throughout the years. Bob also enjoyed gambling and took trips to Las Vegas and Cripple Creek whenever he could.
Bob devoted his time and energy to his family, especially after retirement. He attended his granddaughter’s sporting events in Cody, Wyoming and all of his children’s high school and college graduations. He was a family man from the beginning to the end. Who Was Robert Hawk? He was a son, a brother, a husband, a father and a friend. He will be greatly missed by all.
