After seminary he reentered the Army as a Southern Baptist Chaplain. He served two tours of duty in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War working at forward operating bases. He provided counseling and spiritual guidance to the combat weary and solace to the wounded. For his actions he was awarded the bronze star. He retired from the Army as a LtCol in August 1979.
After his retirement he pursued his passion for hunting, fishing and trap shooting. He took up skiing and was an avid skier spending many days with his wife in Summit County Colorado.
