Richard Allan Wolf of Colorado Springs passed away on June 5, 2012. Dick was born
on April 25, 1940, in Poland, Ohio, and graduated from Poland Seminary High School,
Kent State University and Ball State University. He married Jan C. Thompson on
November 28, 1963 in Lima, Ohio, and they spent the next 48 years making great
memories.
During high school, Dick played football, track and basketball, and in 2005 was inducted
into the Poland Seminary H.S. Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduating from college in
1963, where he earned numerous honors on the football field and became a life member
of the Sigma Nu Fraternity he entered the Air Force and served 2 tours in Vietnam flying
air combat missions as a weapons controller. Upon completion of pilot training in 1968,
he returned to Vietnam and flew 209 combat missions as a Forward Air Controller in
an 0-2. Following his service in Vietnam, he flew a variety of aircraft, including the
T-38 and F-111E, and earned his Command Pilot wings with over 3,000 flight hours.
He also had numerous other assignments, including Base Commander, Fairchild AFB
and Deputy Director of Athletics, USAFA. After retiring from the Air Force as a
Colonel in 1993, he served as the Director of Operations for the 1993 World Police
and Fire Games and the 1995 US Olympic Festival, was the Commissioner of the
Colorado Athletic Conference from 1993-1995 and was a Fleet Technical Instructor
at United Airlines from 1996-2008.
After retiring from United, he dedicated his life to serving others through various
Ministries at Woodmen Valley Chapel. He was instrumental in providing meals to
thousands of underserved people in the local community, and was the Director of
Operations at the Westside Community Center from 2009-2012.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Betty Wolf. He is survived by his
wife Jan, daughter Shannon, son-in-law Danny Brown, grandchildren Justin and Jack,
son LtCol (USMC) Steve, daughter-in-law Kay, grandchildren Andy, Brandon and
Rachel and sister Marilyn McKinnon and her family of Massillon, Ohio.
Services will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at 11am. Woodmen Valley Chapel, 290 E.
