Richie Martinez, 57, passed away in his home in Colorado Springs on December 8, 2020. He was born in Salida, CO and attended Widefield School District for grades K-12. During his years at Widefield High School, Richie was a member of the track team where he became known as "Richie The Miler." Richie was proud to be a member of the 1979, 1980 & 1981 Widefield High School State Track Championship teams. He ended his running career as a H.S. All American and by breaking the Colorado State H.S. Record in the mile, which still stands to this day.
Richie attended the University of New Mexico on a track scholarship and became a collegiate All American track athlete. After graduating college with a degree in Economics, he continued running professionally with Reebok as his sponsor which took him all over the world including to the 1988 Olympic Trials in Indianapolis. After the conclusion of his running career, Richie spent many years working as a financial analyst.
Richie is survived by his son, Zachary Wayne Martinez, partner Tanja Jordan, parents Brenda Jewell and Richard Martinez, sister Cheri Martinez and a nephew, Logan Richard Martinez.
Richie was a kind, generous and compassionate man. He was an avid cyclist and loved to spend time with his family. Richie was a light in our lives; we will miss him dearly and cherish his memory forever.
