Richard W. Kersey

Richard “Dick” William Kersey passed onto his heavenly reward on June 20th, 2022. He was born to Roy and Charlotte Kersey in Coon Rapids, Iowa, on March 12th, 1940, the second youngest of six children (Roy, Keith, Harold, John, Dick, and Mary). The family eventually moved to Guthrie Center, Iowa, where they lived for many years.

In the early 1960s, he married his former wife (Ann) and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Their first son Thomas (†2017) was born in 1961 when Dick was deployed in Korea. Upon returning home from Korea after almost three years, he was stationed at Fort Carson military base in Colorado Springs until being honorably discharged in 1964. During the next few years, Ann and Dick were blessed with three more children: Michael, Teresa, and Richard Jr. Unfortunately, the couple divorced shortly after Richard Jr. was born. In 1972, Dick married Myrna Kersey, and two years later Kimberly was born followed by Jeffrey in 1977. Dick and Myrna were married for nearly 50 years until Myrna’s death in 2021.

After serving his country in the armed services, Dick followed in the footsteps of his father and brothers as a mason. He became a skilled bricklayer, and with his brothers (Roy, Keith, Harold) contributed to the structure and beauty of many buildings still seen in Colorado Springs, Fort Carson, and other cities and towns in Colorado and Wyoming. Dick worked as a foreman for Tristar Masonry for many years until his retirement in 2005 and was a member of the Local 7 Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union for over 35 years. He also had the pleasure of being an instructor for the brick and stone mason apprenticeship program, and successfully graduated many apprentices including his son Jeff who won a national brick mason apprentice competition in 2005.

His favorite pastimes included camping, fishing, shooting, hunting, riding Bultaco motorcycles, backpacking, and restoring classic Mustangs and Jeeps. With an avid interest in history, he also explored the many scenic and historical places in Colorado with Myrna, Kim, and Jeff. His sense of adventure did not diminish as he grew older; he and Myrna travelled to California, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming and continued annual trips to see family in Iowa and South Dakota.

Dick is survived by his children Michael Kersey, Teresa McGroarty, Richard Kersey Jr. (Kristina), Kim Kintz (Dan), and Jeff Kersey; grandchildren Corey McGroarty (Stephanie), Kyle McGroarty (Savannah), Austyn Kersey (Claire), Ethan Kersey, Madison Kersey, Mikala Boor (Eric), and Maximus Kintz; great-grandchildren Liberty, Jace, Hudson, Paisley, and Cedar; sibling John Kersey; in-laws Lee and Mary Rasmussen, Steve and DeEtta Rasmussen, and David Rasmussen; as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and his beloved black lab Macey.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM with a Catholic Memorial Service at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Memorial Gardens, 3825 Airport Road, in Colorado Springs, CO. Lunch reception will be held at the family home following the service and interment.
