He was born October 8, 1947 to Cal and Betty Gates in Edgewood, Iowa and had three siblings, Mark Gates, Melanie Gates, and Melissa Gates-Cantrell. Michael graduated from Marion High School, class of 1966. He married Carma on October 24, 1981 in Marion, Iowa and together they had two children, Coe Gates and Sharon Gates.
Michael worked as an over the road trucker and had a passion for reading Clive Cussler books. Michael had a strong passion for helping junior high children, taking them under his wing. He was very passionate about taking care of foster children and enjoyed his time caring for them.
He is survived by his wife Carma; son Coe; granddaughter Elsa; daughter Sharon; and sisters Melanie and Melissa.
Michael fiercely loved his family, but was stubborn as all get out. In the end, he only wanted the best for everyone.
