Mary Eileen Aitken Sparrow was born on August 23, 1924 in Bartlesville, OK to the late Robert and Ruth Aitken. She was a 1942 graduate of Bartlesville College-High School and later attended Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She served in the United States Navy Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) in World War II. She married the late Clifford Vernon Sparrow III on November 30, 1948 in Washington, DC.
Mary and Clifford raised their family for more than two decades in New Vernon, NJ, before retiring to Woodmoor in Monument in 1978. She moved to Brookdale in 2013. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved her dogs and gardening. She was a member of St. Mathias Episcopal Church in Woodmoor for many years.
Clifford preceded her in death in 2013. She is survived by her son, Gregory (wife, Suzanne) Sparrow of Colorado Springs; and her daughter, Dawn (husband, Frank) Casey of Norman, Oklahoma. She has four grandchildren: Hilary Sparrow Morris (husband, Ted), Erin Sparrow, Kory McCorkle (wife, Katie), Clayton McCorkle (wife Kelly); and a great-granddaughter, Leah McCorkle. In addition to Clifford, Mrs. Sparrow was preceded in death by her sister Betty Mock, her sister Frances Aitken Lee, and her brother Kenneth Aitken.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Swan-Law Funeral Home, 501 N. Cascade Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, behind 107 W Main St, Middletown, MD 21769. A memorial service and lunch will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at Brookdale Senior Living Center (Skyline Room), 2365 Patriot Heights, Colorado Springs CO 80904. Memorials in her name may be made to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, P.O. Box 89367, Tampa, FL 33689.
