Mary was born July 17, 1936, in Kearney, NE, to Thurman Anderson and Mildred Johnson Keester Anderson. She attended grade school in Kearney. Mary moved to Alma, Nebraska, and graduated from Alma High School in 1954.
She attended Colorado Woman’s College in Denver where she was active in theater arts. She graduated from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology. While attending the University, she was an active member of the Alpha Phi social fraternity and several clubs and honor societies. During her freshman year she was initiated into Chapter BJ of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Following graduation, she worked as a speech therapist in the Omaha Public Schools.
Before her marriage to Dr. Stephen Lowe of Kearney, she traveled abroad visiting art museums and historical sites, which began a lifelong interest in arts and culture. Mary and Steve moved to California in 1969.
Mary had a full and dynamic life. She was a docent at the Fine Arts Museums in San Francisco, a guide for the U.S. Government entertaining foreign dignitaries, a member of the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco, president of her P.E.O. chapter, and a member of many church choirs. An avid lover of music, Mary chaired the Redwoods Summer Music Festival and sang with the Marin Opera Company from 1981-1991. Visual arts and cultural endeavors fueled Mary’s intellect. In the early 1980s she and a University of California - Berkeley professor led an academic tour to Greece.
Mary moved back to Nebraska in 1998. She spent happy years at her lake home, where she said she wanted to give her grandchildren “a taste of the country.”
She was contemplative. For her church in Nebraska, she wrote a Lenten study on the Seven Deadly Sins. In her final years, she began to work on a guide to prayer through the Holy Scriptures.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Ann Miller (Scott) and Amy Meger (Larry). She cherished her grandchildren, Jacki Hathaway (Robin), James Miller (Chelsie), and Andy Meger, and great grandchildren, Quinn Corey; Kjersten, Skyla, and Spencer Hathaway; and Conner and Charlotte Miller.
Services will be held at a later date in Alma, NE.
