John, son of the late William R. and Eleanor Johnson, died unexpectedly on Monday April 28th.
John is survived by his wife Peggy Barron Johnson of 17 years, and three daughters: Aimee McClellan, Nicole Mullins, and Elisa Johnson; three step-children: Chris, Kelly and Cody Couch; six grandchildren, one great granddaughter and siblings Bill Johnson and Roy Johnson of Colorado Springs and Helen Johnson of Portland, OR.
“Johnny” served honorably in the US Navy as a Fireman and Damage Control Seaman. He continued his uniformed service as a Firefighter with the Colorado Springs Fire Department for 28 years rising to the rank of Captain. Following his retirement, he continued to serve his community as a Colorado Springs Fire Inspection and Safety Officer. He was a member of the Retired Firefighters Association.
Johnny was a 1967 graduate of Palmer High School and was awarded two Associate Degrees from Pikes Peak Community College in Police and Fire Science.
Johnny was known for his great wit and generous contribution to his community through volunteer work with the building of the Colorado Springs Fire Museum. In addition, he was always there to provide support and skilled labor for his extended family members, many friends and neighbors’ projects. He was a lover of the Colorado outdoors and an accomplished climber of Colorado “14-ers.” He was also known as a “fish magnet” for his unrivaled ability to catch trout in any body of Colorado water.
He was greatly loved and will be missed by his family and his community.
Memorial Gardens will receive flower remembrances. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lester Williams Fire Museum, PO Box 119, Colorado Springs, CO 80901.
Visitation will be 2:00 PM at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel at 3825 Airport Road followed by a funeral service at 4:00 PM on Saturday, 3 May 2014. A reception will follow at the historic “Old Fire Station #4,” 29 South Institute Street, Colorado Springs,Colorado 80903.
