Joanne Layne Moon, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2017 in Colorado Springs, CO. She was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, August 11, 1936, the second of two children born to the late Charles and Kathryn Walsh.
Raised in Clear Lake, Wisconsin, Joanne graduated from Clear Lake Union Free High School in 1954. This is where her long educational aspirations started, with an Associate in Arts from Stephens College 1956; a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from University of Minnesota 1959; a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from Pikes Peak Community College (CO) 1983; and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from University of Northern Colorado 1993.
She was married to Norman Stokely Moon, September 21, 1963, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They moved to Salt Lake City in 1966 and then Manitou Springs, Colorado in 1969 to raise their two children Rebecca Layne and Matthew Stokely.
She took great pride in her educational achievements and focused her career in helping people as a rehabilitation counselor, social worker and psychiatric evaluator. She wanted to make this world a better place for everyone, even those who were misfortunate, afflicted or troubled.
Joanne and her late husband Norman spent many happy years as adventurous outdoor travelers with their children camping in the mountains, skiing, fishing, canoeing rivers and coastal beach trips. The two often enjoyed travelling to other countries (Russia, Ireland, Europe, Mexico, etc.). Joanne continued her travels to countries such as Thailand, France, Germany, New Zealand and more!
Joanne is preceded in death by her parents, husband Norman and sister Doris. She is survived by her daughter Layne Moon and son in law Ricardo Tallamante, son Matthew Moon and daughter in law Lissa Moon, and adoring grandchildren Willem and Lucy and can’t forget her loving cat Scooter.
Joanne was loved and adored by many as she was a feisty one with a super big heart and was always an advocate for others when needed – standing tall fighting for others care and well-being. She was an extremely young, adventurous and independent person.
The Memorial Service will take place Wednesday, January 25th at 11:00 AM at The First Presbyterian Church, 219 East Bijou Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. Reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center Theater, Colorado Springs, CO.
