CWO4 USNR James H. Laverty, loving husband and father went to be with the Lord on August 5, 2018 in his home as desired, in Colorado Springs. Known as Jim to most, he was born October 2, 1929, the first of two children to the late James W. and Mildred E. Laverty.
Jim, upon graduation from Oceanside High School in 1947, became employed by the Public works County of Nassau. He became a licensed land surveyor and rose to the rank of Superintendent of Sewer Maintenance, County of Nassau. In 1950, Jim, a true patriot coming from a long line of patriots, enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve as a Surveyor (SV3) in the Seabees. Eventually serving 34 years with the Navy he rose to and retired with the rank of CWO4 in the Civil Engineer Corps.
Along with his dad and brother, Jim was an avid sea scout, and Eagle scout, a scoutmaster as well as an active adult leader in cub scouts, boy scouts and the Police Boys Club. Loving the Lord, he dedicated much of his time to volunteer work with his local churches and missions; one mission’s trip to Amsterdam and two mission trips to Africa placed in charge of constructing a University in Tanzania.
He leaves behind his beloved wife Roberta, children James B., Roberta (Keith) and Keith (Tiina) along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place Thursday, August 9, 2018 from 4.00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 10, 2018 starting at 1200 p.m., at the same location; a reception with light fare will follow, all in attendance are invited.
