Jean Mathis, beloved wife, step-mother and step-grandmother passed away peacefully on January 27, 2014 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was born in Fort Collins, Colorado, October 10, 1925, the oldest child born to the late Roscoe and Opal Schultz.
Jean graduated from Cache La Poudre High School in 1943. She went on to graduate from Colorado A&M in Fort Collins by 1947. After graduating, Jean began her teaching career in Colorado. She moved to Alaska in 1965 and continued teaching before returning to Colorado. While Jean was teaching in Alaska she also held the position of Treasurer for the Alaska School Activities Association.
Family and friends were extremely important in her life. One hobby Jean loved was traveling in the motor home with husband Gary from 1987 - 1992. They traveled through the lower 48 states attending rallies with the motor home clubs that Gary and Jean belonged to. Other hobbies that Jean loved included snow and water skiing, riding snow machines, and taking care of her beautiful flower garden, especially the begonias. Lastly, she loved being the starter in the Iditarod sled dog race held in Alaska.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, devoted husband, Gary Mathis, loving children, Mike Mathis (Dawn) of Las Vegas, Nevada and Mark Mathis (Linda) of Torrance, California. She also leaves behind 6 grandchildren Matthew, Sheena, Jason, Amanda, Michelle and Jordyn, and 8 great grandchildren, as well as a host of wonderful relatives.
Jean's Celebration of Life will take place Monday February 3, 2014 from 11:30 - 2:30, at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs. Reception will begin at 11:30am with the viewing and service concluding at 2:30pm.
