James married Frances F. Montoya on December 22, 1950, they were married for 61 years. James had been a resident of Colorado Springs since 1966.
James proudly served in the U.S. Army for 20 years retiring as Command Sergeant Major. James entered the Army in 1950; he served two tours each in the Korean War and Vietnam. While in Korea he was assigned to the 10th Engineer Battalion and 24th Infantry Division. He taught at the Army Engineer School , Germany in 1953 and 1954. In 1956 he reported to the U.S. Military Academy, West Point as an instructor in Engineering. In 1966, he reported to Vietnam serving in the 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. James was invigorated by sharing numerous stories about his experiences while serving in the Military and usually began his July 4th celebration listening to cadence in his garage.
After retiring from the Military in 1970, James began his second career as a Building Contractor. He was a Certified Combination Building Inspector and Plans Examiner, served as senior Building Inspector at PPRBD. He was Vice President of North American Homes and served as Building Official in Cripple Creek at the height of their revitalization.
James’ faith in God and inspiration guided his family throughout his life. He is survived by his wife Frances, his children Sam (Jana), Wendel (Marcy), Mary (Art) Vigil, Peggy Torres (Shawn), Jennifer Vasquez, Patricia (Scott) Jesse, Frances (John) Woolnough, 19 grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren. Children Charles, Carol, James Jr. and James Sherman preceded him in death. His best days were those spent surrounded by family and he will forever be in our hearts.
Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, followed by a Rosary at 6:00 p.m., Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903.
A funeral mass is planned for 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 19, 2012 at Holy Apostles Catholic Church, 4925 N. Carefree Circle, Colorado Springs, CO 80917. Graveside services will follow at “Imperial Memorial Gardens”, 5450 Highway 78 West, Pueblo CO., 81005.
