James L. Robertson, age 84, of Colorado Springs CO, passed away peacefully to heaven on December 26, 2019 at 6:59 pm. He was born October 24, 1935 in Porum, Muskogee County, Oklahoma to Bill and Mae Robertson.
James married Rebecca [Beckie] Tidwell on July 21, 1956 at the Assembly of God Church in Tolleson, Arizona. They have a daughter, Cheryl and son Steven. He is survived by Beckie, his wife of 63 years, a brother, Don Robertson of Oklahoma and was predeceased by his parents, six sisters and one brother.
James attended schools in Oklahoma and Arizona and graduated from Tolleson Union High School, Tolleson, Arizona in 1954 where he played football. After graduating from high school he began his career at Mountain Bell Telephone Company and other Bell Telephone Companies retiring 1986 having worked in many different departments during the 31 years.
James proudly served in the Arizona Air National Guard and was activated to active duty during the Berlin Crisis; then returned to the Arizona Air National Guard in Phoenix, AZ where he served the remaining enlistment.
James was very active in church work for many years. He was a youth leader, attended youth rallies throughout the state, summer Camp Meeting in Prescott, AZ, played softball and basket ball and other activities. His favorite experience was singing in a Gospel Quartet and performing in many churches around the area.
Retiring at age 50, a second career was very appealing with Beckie who had also retired from the telephone company. Together they hitched to their 5th wheel RV and enjoyed traveling. During their travels they decided to try driving Tour Buses in the summer at Grand Canyon, Arizona, which lasted for 16 seasons. In addition to driving and giving tours, they found time to enjoy the Grand Canyon. Fond memories of a mule ride to the bottom of the canyon and riding the old Fred Harvey Railroad Train from the Grand Canyon to Williams, Arizona and back. James enjoyed his second career so much they accepted another assignment by Fred Harvey Company to drive buses at Lake Powell, Page, Arizona transporting smooth water and white water rafters going down the Colorado River thru the Grand Canyon. Besides driving busses, they enjoyed a house boat trip for a week, smooth water raft trips, white water raft trip down the Colorado River and boat tours on the lake. In 2000-2005, there was a second tour at the Grand Canyon. The winter months of the 16 seasons was filled with fun times. Joining about fifteen couples of “long-time close friends” with their RV’s traveling to Quartzite, Arizona for a week in January. The group was known as KKIBB CLUB [Kiss Kids Inheritance Bye Bye]. There was shopping at the Swap Mart, then meeting in the club house of the RV Park for dinner, singing gospel songs, skits, and games. The RV Park closed after a few years, so all activities were under a big tent in the desert with RV’s circled around. Wonderful fellowship with friends that will always be remembered.
James will be remembered as a loving, husband, father, grand-father and great grand-father by his wife, Beckie, their children, Cheryl Robertson Dutton and Steven Robertson. Grand-children: Bryan Dutton, Aaron Dutton, Jacob Robertson and great-grand children: Carter, Jeremiah, Emmelia, Shiloh and Joziah.
