James was born in Queens, New York to Eva Hawkins and James Mason on February 9, 1960. He went by “Gregory” during his childhood and was also known as “Zak” by family and friends. He was the younger of two children. He attended high school at Erasmus Hall (Brooklyn) High School. Soon after graduating, he went on to work for the New York City Housing Authority. He was self-employed when he decided to leave New York and make Colorado Springs his home in 1989. He was more than just an employee as he supported his District 11 community at Queen Palmer Elementary School for the last two decades, also offering his time, love, and patience to the Boy Scouts of America.
James was survived by his beloved Mother, Eva Hawkins and his sister, Debra J. Mason. Also by his children, Jamara N. Moye, Abriele M. Mason, Malik Webb, and James E. Lowe; his nephews Darren R. Combest and wife Yadira, Evan J. Combest, and Cody J. Combest.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Word of Life Church, Memorial Gardens Cemetery & Funeral Home, District 11, and the many family and friends who loved and cherished him throughout the years.
