Irene Vera Umberger was born September 21, 1925 in Vale, Oregon and died June 3, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Clara Scott Postma, her brothers, Andrew Glen Postma (Korean War, 1950), and Donald Postma. She is survived by her son, Michael (Suzanne) Knapik; her daughter, Veronica (Giles) Spaulding; two grandsons, Austin (Heather) Knapik and Brian (Melinda) Spaulding; two great granddaughters, Emmalee and Isabel; nieces Melinda (Tim) Koehler and Paula (John) Guerrero and several great nieces, nephews, and cousins in Colorado Springs, Arizona, Montana, and Oregon.
Irene came to Colorado Springs in 1955 when her husband, Louis Knapik (deceased) was stationed at Camp Carson (now Fort Carson). Upon Louis’ military retirement, they became co-owners of the Knotty Pine Inn, Cascade Colorado and The Lunch Box Colorado Springs. Irene most recently worked at the downtown Walgreens prior to her retirement in 1990, when she and her husband, Roy Umberger (deceased), moved to Canon City Colorado. Irene returned to Colorado Springs in 2002. A memorial service celebrating Irene’s life will be held at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, Colorado Springs, June 8, 2017 at 11 AM.
