Hersel B. Carter, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and son, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2016, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born in Bassett, Virginia, August 26, 1934, the third of 5 children to Nannie Ellen Sims and the late Lilburn Hubert Carter.
After receiving his diploma, Hersel enlisted in the United States Air Force and was soon stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. Hersel met Helen in 1952 while she was working at State Theater (and letting those handsome young GI’s in for free). They married in 1952 and then welcomed daughter, Barbara in 1953.
Hersel was on the promotion fast track and achieved Chief Master Sergeant in December 1969 at the age of 35. His 26 years in the Air Force took Hersel, and at times his family, across more than 6 countries and a handful of states. After a short retirement, Hersel began a 13 year career with the United States Postal Service, retiring at the age of 62 where he ultimately discovered the internet.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, devoted wife, Helen; loving daughter, Barbara; dearest granddaughter Angela; precious great grandchildren Brianna, Caiden and Alec Cruise; beloved mother Nannie Ellen Sims; cherished siblings Clarence, Shirley and Frances; as well as a host of wonderful nieces, nephews and friends.
He is preceded in death by his father Lilburn Hubert Carter, beloved stepfather James “Papa” Sims and brother Curt Carter.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, December 7, 2016, from 4:00-7:00pm., at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 10:00am. at Swan-Law Funeral Directors. Burial to follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 3285 Airport Rd, Colorado Springs.
