A beautiful day in Kailua, HI at 10:46 am., a little baby boy was brought into the world by Kathleen and Gary Williams. He was the third child, but the only boy. At last they got their baby boy who would become another G. W. Williams VI. Tears were shed for their healthy little man, even though he was slightly yellow from jaundice. With his ears a little big, wrinkles on the forehead, and yellowish skin it reminded them of Yoda. He was soon given Yoda as a nickname. Grant was a very loving little boy. You could say he was a momma’s boy, always wanting to take care of her. With his sisters (Heather and Amber) he did not have to worry about fighting for attention because it came back to him with sisters fighting to hang out with him. Grant loved always having the attention. He had this aurora around him to bring people to him and always had a way to leave a smile. He was very active child. He had a big love for Karate and he told me he made it to the black belt.
Grant stayed active as he got older. In High School he wanted to letter in as many activities as possible. He loved playing football, ran track, and cheer. Now if I was to be totally honest, I really think knowing my husband the cheer was for the wrong reasons. Hey, can you really blame him? During those years I did not have the pleasure to know him, but from some of the stories he was definitely a trouble maker. He made it to graduate with the Class of 1999. Off to college after that. He soon decided that maybe he was not ready for college at that time and went to the recruiters’ office. He went in and asked who can get me in today and Army path was chosen.
Grant spent 4 years active duty and a tour overseas. When he returned from that tour he met his wife, Kristina. Grant was joining one of his friends who were headed to play pool with some other friends. Kristina happened to be one of the other friends. The minute Kristina saw Grant there was something about him she liked, besides his looks. He actually ended up biting her on the backside that night. Kristina had a smart mouth and met her match that night with Grant.
Grant and Kristina had a long journey from that night in November 2002. Together they had 12 years together. In those years Grant left active duty and moved back to California. Kristina moved from Kansas to join him. Grant signed up for the Army Reserves to continue serving his country. He was a student and reservist. They lost a baby boy 2004, but gained a healthy baby girl named Kierra in 2005. Kierra was the apple of his eye. He was a stay at home dad for the first 13 months of her life. Grant received orders for overseas once again. He was gone for 15 months. Not a moment during that time did he not always make time for Kristina and Kierra. Kierra never forgot her daddy during that tour. He returned in 2008. On his return, he went back to school to try to get his degree in Education. He wanted to be a high school English teacher and coach for football. In 2009, Kristina and Grant decided it would be a perfect time to move out of California. They were expecting another baby girl. Gennaveve joined the family in 2009. How Grant and Genna bonded. It could melt your heart.
Grant still continued his education though things did not work for the education degree. He went another way; Police Academy through Pikes Peak Community College. He graduated and soon went on to Lake County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy. He brought laughter, smart mouth, and fun to the office. He was truly happy being in law enforcement. His family was very proud as well. He was meant to be a super hero and in a way he was. A year after joining the Sheriff’s office he was diagnosed with cancer in December 2012.
The doctors were baffled with the type since none of them have ever seen it. It took about 3 weeks for the cancer to be named Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumors. Grant was scared, he wanted to live. He said he would fight this and beat it. It had chosen the wrong host. During the course of chemo, Kristina and Grant made a trip to the county recorder’s office and married on August 21, 2013. A year of chemo we got good news in September 2013, the tumors had shrunk and looked really good. Grant was set for a 2nd opinion in Denver; the doctor said we would continue the chemo treatment since it was still working. Grant happened to get a 6 week break, during that time he started to feel worse. He got within 4 weeks and found out the cancer was starting to spread again. Chemo started right away. In January 2014, he was finally told chemo was no longer helping. He wanted to keep fighting and see about other options. In February we started a trial drug, though he was getting weaker and the side effects he did not like. When it was told to him that even with treatment he would maybe get a few more months to live. He made the decision to live with what time he had left. He was tired.
The decision Grant made was not an easy one for him. He was full of life and love. Kristina stood by every decision he chose to the very end. He will truly be missed by everyone and never forgotten. He enjoyed all the time he got with friends and family.
Thank you, Grant Williams, for being you and being a part of our lives. Never to be forgotten.
