Glenn David Williams 1926 - 2011, was born in Columbus, Ohio to Glenn and Ellen Williams. His mother died at his birth, he was raised until 1934 by his paternal grandmother Elizabeth. From that date he was raised by his Aunt Grace Elliot until maturity.
He received his schooling in the Columbus public schools, graduating in 1944. He was in the Navy from 1944 to 1946, serving on a submarine in the Pacific. He returned to civilian life and married Joan Ruth Libben in 1948, who preceded him in death. They were married for 57 years. Joan and Glenn had two children, both of whom died in 1985.
Glenn completed his college degree in 1950 and became a teacher in the Worthington Ohio Public Schools, where he was high school principal from 1954 to 1960.
He completed his PhD degree in 1960 at Ohio State University and accepted a position at Eastern Illinois University as professor of Philosophy. In 1961 he was elevated to Associate Dean the thence to Vice President. He served as Fulbright Professor on the island of Ceylon in 1969-70. He was a consultant to Mainland China in both 1983 and 1987, after serving the same role in Taiwan in 1980. He completed his over-seas assignment as a consultant in Japan in 1989.
Dr. Williams retired in 1992 and moved, with his wife Joan, to Colorado Springs. He became involved in the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, particularly in the softball program. He is a member of First United Methodist Church.
Donations in his name may be made to the Joan and Glenn Williams Women’s Athletic Endowment at UCCS, Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo or Kerygma Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church.
Memorial service will be held on Friday, May 6, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs.
