Glen was born at home on his parent’s farm in Goodwine, Illinois (near Whiskey Creek, just past Joe Beer’s house). His early elementary education was at Goodwine’s one-room schoolhouse; and in 1963 he graduated high school from Milford, IL High School. He left the farm shortly after graduating and headed to Colorado. He worked odd jobs until he turned 18 and could be hired by Martin Marietta, in Denver. He was proud to have gotten to work on the Titan project before it was terminated. When that job came to an end, Glen took a job selling encyclopedias in the western states. He thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of selling, socializing, and the traveling adventures he got to experience with that job. But it all took a toll on his health and pneumonia took him back to Illinois.
In April 1965, he began his career with National Cash Register (NCR) in Mundelein, Ill., as a field technician servicing their mechanical equipment in the Chicago suburbs. In his spare time Glen bought a 2-seater Air Coupe and with the help of an uncle in Indiana, he taught himself how to fly an airplane. He also joined a ski club and, at a little hill in Wisconsin, he learned how to ski.
In the spring of 1974, NCR began leasing company vehicles to their service technicians. To raise some capital, Glen decided to sell his personal car and his airplane and go into the used car business on the side. In March 1974, in an attempt to sell her his airplane, he met his future wife and business partner, Rosemary Davies Miller. They were married September 27, 1975. In 1979, Glen asked NCR to transfer him to Colorado and the couple moved to Longmont, CO, where their two children were born. In 1988, NCR promoted Glen to a managerial position in Colorado Springs. Glen continued to juggle his NCR job with the car business. In 1996, the side hustle incorporated as GEM Wheels, Inc., though Glen didn’t retire from his day job at NCR until his 40th work anniversary in 2005. Glen wanted to be active and working to the end of his life, and he was.
Glen is survived by his wife, Rosemary D. Miller; a daughter, Amanda Miller Luciano (Joe); and a son, Adam D. Miller; two grandsons: Zachary J. Miller and Holt R. Luciano; one sister, Gloria Karlin (Harvey) of Simpsonville, SC; and many special in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Sheila Remley, of Largo, FL; brothers-in-law: John Remley of Largo, FL, Kenneth Lumberry of Delong, IL, and Jack Moore of Williamsfield, IL; sisters-in-law: Linda Davies of Maquon, IL and Lois Jean Raibel of Rio, IL; one niece and several nephews and cousins.
