Gene Combs passed away peacefully at his home in Colorado Springs. The oldest of six children, he was born in Enid, Oklahoma to Horace and Carrie Combs. He is survived by three sisters: Mary Helen Downing, Anne Zachary, and Dorothy Clark. He was married for 53 years to the love of his life, Jimmie Rae Murray, who preceded him in death. They had four children: Susan Combs (Colombia, South America), Alan Combs, Lynn Combs Hoffman (Steve), and Karen Combs, all of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by two grandchildren: Christopher Hoffman (Britta) and Alyssa Hoffman Hill (Ryan), and one great-grandchild, Miles.
Gene served in the Army-Air Corps in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a proud American who valued God, family and patriotism. His love of flying and airplanes lasted his entire life. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma and worked in business, banking and real estate during his career. He was a president of Junior Achievement, a member of the Board of Realtors, and a Military Affairs Council Member of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce.
Gene lived a life of integrity and was loved and respected by those who knew him. His dry sense of humor brought smiles to all, and his generous giving helped many who were less fortunate. He was a voracious reader and had a vocabulary matched by none. He was the epitome of “true grit” – he stayed strong and never gave up. He will be greatly missed.
