Gene joined the Army in 1942 as WWII began and served in the Philippines and also in Japan after Japan’s surrender. He was discharged in 1945, and one year later, in July of 1946, he married the love of his life, Edna D. (Anderson) Carpenter. He was a crane operator for Cowen Moving & Storage and was also involved in the Boy Scout program with his sons. After retirement Gene and Edna moved to the ranch east of Calhan where Gene grew up and raised cattle. They were members and enjoyed the fellowship of the United Methodist Church in Calhan. Gene loved to go camping and fishing and took his family on many enjoyable outings. He also built the family home in Colorado Springs from the ground up over a period of years.
Gene was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Sandra Bertram, and by his parents, Anna (Oliver) and Martin Carpenter. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Edna; a brother, Robert Romero; three children: Linda J. (Michael) Smith, Stephan E. (Nelia) Carpenter, and Jeffrey W. (Annie) Carpenter; six grandchildren: Shawn (Ellen) Carpenter, Shelly (Carl) Martinez, Sara Carpenter, Andy Linthicum, Joseph Carpenter and Corey Carpenter; and eleven great grandchildren.
