Derek spent his younger years as a student in District 20, where he made and still maintains lots of lifelong friendships. He was known for his kindness, goodwill, and incredible sense of humor. He was an avid gamer, a fashion trendsetter, and a downright local celebrity.
Derek loved his family and friends. He expressed himself best through art and music. His existentialist perspective allowed him to intelligently debate any topic for hours. He easily left you questioning your own positions and opinions while leaving behind a profound influence and comforting acceptance.
Derek is survived by his mother; RaBecca Taylor-Mercil, his sisters; KaTarra Taylor and Lyric Jensen (Daniel Trujillo), his brothers; Hayden Willingham and Izak Gonzolez, his nephew Leonardo Trujillo, stepfather Dustin Mercil, his extended Taylor, Jensen, Mercil, Sorenson, and Doty families, his three best friends; Quade Doty, Stone Sorenson (Indi Heiser, Cassian Sorenson), and Zack Ford.
Derek has far too many friends and family members to list them all. He was loved by countless people and influenced even more during his short life.
