He attended college at Southern Illinois University where he studied Performing Arts. He relocated to Champaign, Illinois where he became a firefighter with the Champaign Fire Department. There he met his wife, Nancy Shakeshaft-Slack. They were together for 43 years and had 3 children.
Dan was well known for his work with Colorado Springs youth sports. He was a soccer coach when his children were young, then moved on to become a referee and umpire for youth soccer, basketball, girls softball, and baseball. He tried girls volleyball, but since he was vertically challenged that didn't last long.
Dan was well known for his lifelong love of the Chicago Cubs and the Colorado Avalanche. He liked attending their games, especially with his children. He spent many happy hours at these games. He would make anywhere from 50 -75 rum cakes each year over the holidays to give to family, friends, teachers or anyone who needed a pick up.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Nadine Slack.
Dan was survived by his wife Nancy, children, Kyle (Sarah) whom he shared a birthday with, Jonathan (Dana) and Erin, whom he delivered and shared a lifelong unique bond with. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Theodore, Samantha and Avery. He is also survived by his siblings, Doug (Susan) of Chicago Illinois; Debbi Woodford of Kauai, Hawaii; Richard (Laura) of Rye New York; Jeffrey (Margaret) of Las Vegas, Nevada; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial barbecue party will be held in late spring or early summer, more information to come.
Internment will be at Pikes Peak National Cemetery in Colorado Springs, CO.
