Daniel Mattson passed on to heaven to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 4, 2012 at the Veterans Nursing Home in Walsenburg, Colorado. Daniel was born in Petalax, Finland on August 9, 1928, the second of four children born to the late Magnus and Anni Mattson.
Daniel was married to his devoted wife, Helen Holtskog Mattson, with whom he had three children: Roy Mattson of Ijamsville, Maryland, Glenn Mattson of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Bruce Mattson of Torrance, California. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a sister, Doris Intracaso of Colorado Springs.
Daniel’s parents were American citizens, but lived in Finland. Daniel, along with his entire family, immigrated in 1948 to the United States. He served in the United States Air Force and was deployed to Thailand during the Vietnam War. Daniel earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Colorado on August 5, 1983. After he retired from 28 years in the Air Force, Daniel pursued his second career in Colorado Springs working for the District Attorney’s Office in the Juvenile Diversion Division.
Daniel enjoyed being a part of the local Sons of Norway. He and Helen were both charter members of the Colorado Springs Fjellheim Sons of Norway Lodge.
Daniel and Helen attended First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs since the 1970’s. Daniel loved being involved in church, where he participated in many activities. His faith in God was foremost to him. His last moments on earth found him requesting his Bible from his kind caregivers at the Nursing Home.
Daniel supported many organizations that reached out to people who were going through hard times. At one time he supported Big Brothers, and later in life Daniel was very involved in the ministry of Prison Fellowship in Colorado Springs.
A memorial service for Daniel is scheduled for Tuesday, January, 10, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou Street. Private burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Prison Fellowship, P.O. Box 1550, Merrifield, VA 22116. Prison Fellowship’s web address is: prisonfellowship.org.
