Betty Katheryn Horn went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 14, 2012 at the age of 89. She was born in Clarinda,, Iowa to John (Jack) and Vera Pruitt Slocum. Betty attended Clarinda High School where her own father was the principal and she was a member of the marching band, playing the French horn. For a brief time, Betty attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, and from there began working at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines. It was in the halls of the Iowa statehouse that a young man named Robert M. (Bob) Horn saw her and said to his friend, “I’m going to marry that girl one day.” He did and Betty and Bob shared 66 wonderful years together. Their marriage was built on faith and an example of lasting commitment and faithfulness.
Betty waited for Bob to return from duties in the Azores during WWII and upon his return to Iowa, set up a home with their first child, Linda. Following the birth of their son, Mark, they moved to Englewood, Colorado in 1949 where Bob worked in sales. In 1954, Bob and Betty moved the family to Colorado Springs where their third child, Elayne was born. A few years later, Betty began her civil service career from which she retired in 1984. She was recognized and rewarded for her professional skills and contributions, but most treasured the many enduring friendships developed while at work.
Betty was among the founding members of Northeast Bible Chapel where she generously served her Lord in both visible and behind the scenes ways such as Vacation Bible School, chapel cleaning, food preparation and leading co-dependency workshops.
She took great pride in and prayed diligently for her family. She is survived by her brother John Slocum of Henderson NV, her children Linda Campbell of Ridgefield WA, Mark Horn (Lynn) of Fort Smith AR, and Elayne Wieker of Colorado Springs. She was affectionately called “Grammy” by her eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob, her parents and her sister, Virginia Sharkey.
Betty was a mighty prayer warrior for her family and others and a great encourager. She shared her faith and love for her Savior with all who had the joy to know her.
