Fondly known as Al, he was born on December 17, 1948, grew up in Colorado Springs and attended Cheyenne Mountain High School. Al knew from a young age that he wanted to be a chemist, much to his mother's dismay, because she never knew what he was going to concoct in the kitchen! He went on to get his undergraduate degree at Cornell University in chemistry. Afterwards, he went straight onto Michigan State receiving his PhD in chemistry. Al taught chemistry at Columbia University, and went on to Berlex pharmaceuticals, and then back to Rutgers University to teach.
Around 2000, his father became ill, so All decided to come back to Colorado to take care of the family business in Woodland Park and Falcon, Colorado. Ranching and taking care of the water business suited him well. Again, he taught at Colorado College for 10 years and moved on to UCCS to teach and do research.
Al lived a full life, often enjoying hunting on the ranch and fishing with friends when he went to conferences.
Al waits in heaven for his loving wife Martha F Hagedorn. Although they were married in 2014 it was filled with adventure travel and most of all devotion to each other.
Survived by his brother, George Hagedorn of Virginia and nephew Charles Hagedorn of Seattle Washington. He is proceeded in passing by his father Alfred A. Hagedorn II and mother, Beatrice Hagedorn.
A ceremony of life will be held at Swan Law Funeral Home in Colorado Springs at 501 Cascade St. on Monday, July 18 at 1 PM with food to follow from 2 to 4 PM.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the leukemia and lymphoma society or your favorite cancer research affiliation.
