She was born on April 30, 1932 in Wilbarger County to Casey and Jeanetta Howard.
Pearl was raised in West Texas and went to school in the Courtney Community near Midland. She was proud to have attended Texas Christian University and went on to Midland Business College where she obtained an Associates Degree. She worked for several years for Caprock Electric while also tending to chores and helping on the farm. She enjoyed being the best wife, mother, and grandmother she could be. Over the years she taught her children the art of sewing, cooking, canning, and many other life lessons. She enjoyed entertaining guests at home and church functions, often having extra guests at the dinner table on Sundays after church. She loved playing games and especially winning at whatever game she was playing. She enjoyed teaching the grandchildren how to play her favorite games. She was believer and follower of Jesus and a long-time member of the Crockett and Smiley Church of Christ in Loraine. She enjoyed family singing and fellowship. Pearl spent many hours volunteering with school groups, as a Brownie troop leader. Later she found a home with the ladies auxiliary volunteers at the hospital where she was active for more than 15 years.
Pearl is survived by her children Jeanie Childers and husband David of Shallowater. Nancy Switzer and husband David of Ballinger, Thresa Brown and husband Craig of conifer Colorado, Dwayne Smith and wife Cheryl of Loraine, Landy Smith and wife Marla of Hernando Mississippi and by grandchildren Katy, Casey, Seth, Emily, Cory, Nicky, Nathan, Sarah and Brandy as well as by 21 great-grandchildren and one more on the way. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Casey and Jeanetta Howard, by her husband Gene Smith, her brothers W.T. Bill Howard, Burnell Howard, and Jim Howard, as well as by sisters Oleta Stewart and Lena Holt and a granddaughter, Rhonda Childers.
A celebration of Pearl’s life will be held on Friday, March 8th at 2 pm at the 22nd and Austin Church of Christ with Scott Dykowski officiating. Burial will follow in the Loraine Cemetery.
The family will be present for a visitation at the 22nd and Austin Church of Christ from 1pm until the time of the service.
